Penny Winter has over 20 years of experience working in Kenya’s fashion industry. Operating as a design and product developer, she links highly-skilled artisans to international luxury markets. Her extensive local network and thoughtful design sensibility, paired with her virtuosity in the production of world class garments, jewellery and accessories, place her in a unique position to consistently consult and actualize ambitious high-fashion projects.
Beyond the Penny Winter fashion and jewellery brand, her personal portfolio presents a wide breadth of knowledge in pattern cutting, construction and styling.
1993-1995 : Pattern maker and tailor with the Royal Shakespeare Company 1995-1997 : Pattern maker and tailor with English National Opera.
1997-2001 : Designer and stylist for Blue Sky Africa productions.
Costume designer on the set of the Constant Gardener and the Last King of Scotland.
Penny set up alongside her own evening wear and formal/wedding wear production, the production house for SUNO, a New York based fashion house. From its inception, penny headed the pattern making, the sampling and the entire production, garments that retailed at internationally renowned Barneys, Browns, Liberty, Harrods and Net-a -Porter to name a few.
2007- To date
The brand further expanded into horn based jewelry and accessories. Again, partnering with mainly American design houses, from Kenya, Penny headed the design, sampling and production for the Ashley Pittman collection and several others. Turning out four collections a year (each comprising of around 60 styles) Penny’s company managed 200 people, the design work, development and production.
Stores for the jewelry distribution currently include: Bergdoff Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Net- a -porter, Stanley Korshak in the USA and Browns London.
Penny Winter products have been worn by Lupita Nyong’o, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Erin O'connor, Trudy Styler, Helena Christiansen, Princess Caroline of Monaco, Christina Aguilera and Uma Thurman.
