In 2022 Penny Winter launched the lifestyle brand ‘NIKO’: stylish, lifetime pieces made in Kenya for global adventurers. NIKO is a brand built from a community of artisans, creating production and opportunity, strengthened by Winter’s on in-depth understanding of the industry, and deep knowledge of garment technology and design.
NIKO comes from the Swahili ‘I am here.’ Be present. Appreciate the people and the process behind the product, as much as the person who wears it. NIKO stands for responsible luxury from a 100% Kenyan brand. Every garment and piece of jewellery is made in Kenya, by Kenyans.
With a career spanning both fashion and costume Penny Winter initially trained and worked in men’s period costume construction at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the English National Opera.Penny Winter is a prolific Northern Ireland-born designer, entrepreneur and consultant with a wealth of experience in the international and Kenyan fashion industry. She trained in costume design and construction at the London College of Fashion, and garment technology at the Belfast College of Technology.
In the late 1990s she moved to Kenya and co-designed wardrobe for the films The Constant Gardener and The Last King of Scotland. Winter’s designs have be worn by Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow and Elle MacPherson, along with Princess Caroline of Monaco, Helena Christensen.
