Amber House Lamu

Seeking style and substance and sanctuary? Then you’re next stop should be Penny Winter’s secret holiday retreat in Lamu.

Situated in the heart of Old Town, Amber House is a splendid oasis, offering a sensory-filled getaway and the very best of Kenyan coastline experiences. Indulge yourself in perfect king prawns and Belgian fries at Lamu House along the dockside.

Kick back and relax on Shela Beach, just a boat ride away. Explore the fort and museum, enjoying insights into the Swahili and Arabic history so intrinsic to the island. Sip Old Pals, a magical juice-and-spirits concoction on the Peponi Hotel terrace.

Wind your way through the colorful alleyways and footpaths. Taste the tradition of Amber House’s cook, Mohammed, with classic dishes such as Zanzibar Fish Soup, Ginger Crab and Swahili Fish Curry with Fresh Coconut. Snorkle at Manda Toto, or engage one of the old wooden dhows to explore Lamu, and its surrounding islands, even further.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, Lamu Old town is regarded as one of the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. Built in mangrove timber and coral stone, the town is characterized by simplicity with the exception of elaborately-carved wooden doors. There are no roads or cars on the island; residents and visitors alike move about on foot or by boat. Donkeys are mainly used to transport goods and materials.

Recently restored to its former glory in contemporary Swahili style, Amber House comes fully staffed and easily accommodates six to eight persons in true Lamu comfort. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the courtyard, plunge into the pool, laze on the rooftop terrace with its spectacular view all the way to the water, or sample all that Lamu’s ancient history, traditional foods and Arabic culture have to offer, Amber House lends itself beautifully to your heart’s desire.

Rented out on a self-catering basis, Penny’s place is ideal for families, couples or a great group of friends.
